I think that artist!Black knew that, but went ahead with the research facility. Their reasoning (as I do not know her/his gender) was to make a reference to Mewtwo. Sort of.
Just look at the parallels: Morpheus was used in a lab. Mewtwo was made/used in a lab. Morpheus killed a fairly large amount of lab workers and destroyed the lab. Mewtwo killed all the lab workers and blew the lab up.

Morpheus is a Greek god first and foremost, you bleedin’ idjit. Just because a character in a thing happens to have the name as well doesn’t mean it’s a reference to that character or thing.
In fact Matrix Morpheus is a reference to the Greek god as well because the matrix is accessed while asleep. I’m getting more appalled at people’s lack of knowledge for mythology, seriously soon legendary pokemon will be forgotten or misconstrued.

Yay, someone explaining the Dreamyard. Why are all high-tech things abandoned in Pokemon games? New Mauville, the Kanto Power Plant, the Valley Windworks was operational but haunted… This is the world that invented Pokeballs and miraculous Full Restores and Maglev Trains, not to mention the ridiculous floating fortresses seen in the movies! Why can’t they maintain their own technology?!
